Frequently Asked Questions

People often ask what is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy. There are many overlaps. Both are talking therapies. I see counselling as more solution focussed and usually for clients who wish to talk through a few issues that may be currently troubling them. It is generally short -term (6-12sessions). Psychotherapy, I see as a longer-term, more open-ended and in-depth approach to life's broader concerns.

DO YOU GIVE ADVICE?

I will not advise or direct clients. I will discuss with clients the various options open to them to enable them to find greater clarity in making their own choices. Ultimate ethical responsibility rests with the client.

IS THERE A TIME LIMIT TO THERAPY?

It is generally open-ended and the client should make the decision when to stop. There may be a danger of the therapy becoming an addiction in itself, so I review the work with clients at regular intervals.

WHAT PROBLEMS DO CLIENTS BRING?

Clients generally come when they are dissatisfied with how they are living their lives. They may be frustrated with their working lives .Their personal relationship may be at crisis point,or they may be suffering the aftermath of bereavement. They may have ongoing problems with alcohol and other addictions. People also come with self-esteem issues, anxiety, depression, guilt, shame.

WHAT CAN I REVEAL ABOUT MYSELF?

Everybody has the right to be heard, but do not always have the experience of being listened to, respectfully. It may have felt unsafe to reveal themselves and difficult to trust anyone. Consequently much will remain unsaid and unsayable. Therapy should provide a safe non-judgmental space where you can discuss whatever is causing you distress. Trust is the essence of effective therapy. It is of ultimate importance that you feel your therapist is a safe and trustworthy person to work with.

WHAT DO I OFFER?

I offer a safe confidential non-judgmental space to explore whatever issues are causing you distress .
I do not label you, I do not analyze you and I don't direct you to places you don't want to go to and I do not make promises that are impossible to achieve.
